Drummer/producer ?uestlove is a Quincy Jones for our times: a living link between the digital science of modern hip hop and the flesh-and-blood textures of vintage r 'n' b. Besides a pivotal role in the Soulquarians, not to mention the broader Philly scene, ?uestlove co-founded The Roots, who rejuvenated hip hop in an instrumental flurry that flits effortlessly between jazz, funk, rock and reggae - even disco. Meanwhile his collaborations with such artists as D'Angelo, Jay-Z and Common have reasserted the importance of real-time playing in a style dominated by sampling and programming. He's also the mastermind behind crucial heads' website okayplayer.com. This Illadelphian moves feet as well as minds, with music that's pithier than a licorice twig.

Born in London in 1958, Adrian Sherwood is one of the most prominent figures of the reggae scene. As the founder of the ground-breaking On-U Sound label in 1980 and the reggae reissue specialist Pressure Sounds, he gained a worldwide reputation as Europe's number one in the reggae business. In addition he has also worked as a producer, studio technician and remixer. Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Yazz and Living Colour are only few of the many artists he has blessed with his mixes and has collaborated with legendary reggae singers and producers including Prince Far I, Bim Sherman and the infamous Lee 'Scratch' Perry.

Spearheading tomorrow's sounds of soul and jazz, with lashings of techno, Brazilian, and afrobeat influences, Jazzanova have been bringing us the new for over a decade. It was Fedime's Flight that first brought this collective of DJs and producers to the attention of UK tastemakers like Gilles Peterson. Since then, a slew of constantly surprising remixes for the likes of 4 Hero, Azymuth, and Ennio Morricone, placed them firmly on the map, and opened the floodgates for their brand of jazz-influenced dance music. Meticulous producers with an incredible ear for drum break details, the sextet have neatly split into two teams of three - conquering dancefloors as DJs, while the producers stay home and cook up tasty dubplate treats.

Session: Alex Rosner - Systematic Sound Pt.2Systematic Sound Pt.2
Alex Rosner began his love affair with sound in the golden age of hi-fi - and by the early '70s had pioneered the first stereo soundsystem in clubs, the first pair of tweeter arrays and crossover. You're likely to hear his name mentioned in connection with the success of legendary New York clubs such as David Mancuso's The Loft; but you might not know he radically changed the world of DJing when he came up with the prototype for another new gadget - a friendly little mixer with cueing system called Rosie. Alex Rosner has plenty of tricks for people interested in clear, loin-vibrating sound reproduction - but when we say, "That’s magic", he says, "That's just ordinary basic principles."

Alex Smoke's got it runnin'. The Glasgow producer and DJ is one of those dudes you always thought would do something good, then suddenly he seemed to write two classic techno albums overnight. Seriously, the Detroit-based, Euro-looking 4/4 stuff he makes is more assured and impressive than anything you've ever heard. With the backing of Soma Records, as tight a ship as ever sailed out of Glasgow's yards, he rarely gets to see his home town anymore, which is tough 'cause it's a friendly place and lots of people there like him. Hey ho, that's life when you're a hot new talent.
Alexander Robotnick

Session: Alexander Robotnick - Houston, We Have A 'Problemes'Houston, We Have A 'Problemes'
While Kraftwerk were deep into the Western classical ting, Alexander Robotnick mixed jazz and his influences from punk and new wave groups to deliver his very own take on late '70s dancefloor culture. He began his musical career with a Roland 303 and 808 and laid down some demential Electro, before the independent label Materiali Sonori suggested he should try recording some Disco tunes to make a quick buck, Problemes d'Amour - a self-confessed flop - sold 10.000 copies way back in '83 and went on to influence Chicago house and Detroit techno along the way.

Session: Amp Fiddler - Turn Up The AmpTurn Up The Amp
For 45 year old Joseph 'Amp' Fiddler, it's been a lifelong journey of musical discoveries. After starting out in the group Enchantment, circa 1982 he became rather more enchanted with the music of Parliament and Funkadelic. Thanks to his hard work and determination it was only two years before George Clinton took him on as a band member. Having achieved this goal, he surveyed the tones and textures of electronic dance by working with artists as diverse as Maxwell, Jay Dee, Prince, and Moodymann. These collabos came out of a simple desire to help out and see cats fulfill their dreams, and in turn gave him the knowledge he needed to fast forward into the future of house music.

The Arabian Prince has been making robots shake their shit since the early '80s, producing his own tracks and playing live shows with The Egyptian Lover, World Class Wreckin' Cru and the LA Dream Team. It was his early electro rap experiments which got him some serious attention and respect from his L.A. contemporaries, and soon his innovation in the studio and dedication to the party led to him working with N.W.A. alongside Dr Dre. In his session at the Red Bull Music Academy Brother Rab joins the dots between L.A., Detroit and Miami, and breaks down the fundamentals of the L.A. scene in the early '80s.

Having first strung chords together as teens in a small Australian country town, Cameron Bird, Jamie Mildren and Sam Perry moved to Melbourne, that Antipodean port for the creatively inclined, and formed the romantic indie-electronic behemoth known as Architecture In Helsinki. Heartfelt dark folk ditties and shimmery jams emerged from Supermelodyworld, in a massive church hall on Melbourne's Southeast side, until a trip by Cameron to the Pacific Northwest led them to condense influences of Portland Oregon, post-acid Beach Boys, Wu Tang Clan, The Magnetic Fields and Mexican food into sub-2.5 minute pop songs, sharp and catchy, with no time to look at your shoes. Pump organ and busted-up guitar jangle against a new horn section, with Tara Shackell, Isobel Knowles and Gus Franklin adding their chops. Like a mutant gene or a polygamist cult, AIH keep growing in size and influence as they continue to redefine pop music.

The night train is coming... better keep on runnin', to catch the Baker man with his dancefloor bread 'n' butter. He may have pioneered the first electronic rap record with Bambaataa but his musical career has encompassed virtually every genre with a bit of groove in it, and his influence widened far beyond Planet Rock. Baker began his incredible journey as a DJ playing Philly soul 45s, before steeping himself in the underground disco scene after a move to the Big Apple. He contributed his share of anthems to the legendary New York club Paradise Garage in the late '70s/early '80s, like the rolling blunted funk of Rockers Revenge - Walking On Sunshine. Another of those anthems was a track Arthur did with Salsoul virtuoso Joe Bataan, Rap-O Clap-O, one of the first records to incorporate rap, some time before he laid down the beats for the man with even more 'A's in his name (Bambaataa). And the Philadelphia Soul beast reared its beautiful head again when he produced Hall & Oates' most electronic effort. These days you can find him as active as ever, on Darren Emerson's Underwater label.

We coaxed him out of hiding to come and talk about the science of living and breathing Latin American music, finally getting to a place where you can re-interpret Kraftwerk, the deep science of the cover version, his Japanese approach to collaboration, the rapid process of electronic music definition and the subsequent and irritating result of classification.

Benga Adejumo is a 21-year-old dubstep producer from Croydon, South London. He's the one to blame for the legion of people humming the narcotically addictive beeping line from his soon-come Tempa release with fellow steppah Coki. That 'bo bo bo boo boo boo boo bleep' call? It's called Night. He's been on the scene since the tender age of 13 when he first went to lynchpin night, Forward to hear his debut track Skank being spun by Hatcha. A slew of influential tracks followed - his spooky, heavy early teen collaboration with Skream, titled Judgement; reggae-sampling unreleased gems like World War 7 and The Fittest; and tracks that match his plugged-into-the-mainframe DJ style like the head-blowing, tempo-shattering Crunked Up. He's ready to blow.

Session: Benny Sings - Under CoversUnder Covers
Tim van Berkestijn was born in 1977 - the year that the Brother Johnson's version of Strawberry Letter 23 went to #1, and Chet Baker released Autumn Leaves and Far Away (with Astrud Gilberto). Tim's parents were hip to all of it - not forgetting The Carpenters. Little did they know that 27 years later, their son would come full circle, re-invent himself as Benny Sings and debut his own version of incandescent pop in the major keys... Lush, swinging hip hop influenced neo-soul with a singer-/songwriter edge and a six-piece band for his live shows. Having experimented with electronic breakbeats and his faithful guitar, he says the key to a powerful piece is to make every note count.

Whether it's James Brown or Aretha Franklin, jazz heavyweights like Jimmy Smith or Galt MacDermot, firing Latin leaders like Pucho and Mongo Santamaria or even - controversially - The Beatles, Bernard Purdie's innate timekeeping has provided the foundation for innumerable hit tracks, and the Purdie break has become the stuff of drum folklore. But growing up in the '40s in a family of fifteen meant the young Purdie had to get out there and make some corn - and he took that work ethic from group to group, whether carrying 'water' for band leader Leonard Hayward, pestering people for whatever session work he could get, or putting up his 'If you need me, call me' hitmaker signs in the studio.

Session: Bob Moog - The Soul Machine Pt.2The Soul Machine Pt.2
Bob Moog changed the face of popular music by producing the first ever commercially available synthesizers. His journey began in 1954 when he enlisted the help of his father to start making theremins, which he spent ten years making for science fiction movies and avantgarde musicians. The first Moog Modular was knocked up for fun, as a project for his musician friend Herbert Deutsch. But pretty soon, after the first strains of success by (Walter, who became) Wendy Carlos, the Moog stole its way into the heart of rock and jazz fusion - appearing on the Beatles’ Abbey Road and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds - and helped instigate all types of electronic music. At the end of 1977, Bob left Moog Music and founded Big Briar, teaching music technology courses at the University of North Carolina at Asheville from '89 to '92. Though he may have left us for a higher plane, he has left an enormous legacy behind, having irreversibly changed the sonic landscape of the world.

Even if you're not familiar with his name, you know Bob Power's work if you bought a good hip hop record some time in the last 15 years. From true school classics like A Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders or The Low End Theory, through to defining the seminal sound of The Roots and four of their ground-breaking albums, or even helping out on dancefloor party jams like Dee-Lite's Groove is in the Heart, his contribution to the history of urban beats is vast. But you might never notice it if you don't read the sleevenotes on the back of your well-worn records. "I just turn knobs until it sounds good," and, "I like things to be right, but vibe is everything," are the sorts of quotes that personify the attitude of one of the rap game's best kept secrets. So sit back and prepare for some electric relaxation, as we let the master of mixing those sharp snares and deep kicks break down the art of making timeless records.

Ann Arbor sits about 40 miles away from Detroit, it's rough and tumble older brother. And the city stands proud as home of Brendan M. Gillen, better known as BMG - the man in charge of the Interdimensional Transmissions label and Ectomorph - two dynamic, long-standing Michigan institutions. Little is known about Gillen's private life. Upholding the Detroit tradition of obfuscation, he seems to keep all things that are not directly linked to his music shrouded in mystery. But who cares if we don't know what toppings he prefers on his pizza? What we do know is that this man was - and is - responsible for the re-emergence of electro. His label was behind the release of I-F's Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass - a huge hit with influential DJs such as Sven Vaeth and Dave Clark, regarded as the tune that put electro back on everyone's playlist. As of late, you might find Gillen giving vinyl and laptop DJ performances as BMG of Ectomorph.

Brian Cross was born in Limerick in the South West of Ireland. His first encounters with hip hop in the early '80s sealed a life-long love affair with this music and culture. As a student of fine art in NCAD in Dublin he specialised in photography and it was after completing his degree that he moved to L.A. to pursue post graduate studies. It was in L.A. that he studied under the supervision of the influential author of City Of Quartz, Mike Davies. Davies encouraged Brian to combine his love of hip hop culture, photography and politics which led to the publication of a book It's Not About A Salary - Rap And Resistance In L.A.. The book featured many of the earliest exponents of West Coast hip hop alongside a political and cultural history of L.A.. It was one of the earliest books published dealing with hip hop directly. The connections he made with the West Coast scene at that time led Brian to photograph everyone from Kool Keith to De La Soul.

From humble beginnings in the Canadian backwaters, Dan Snaith aka Caribou shook off a teenage love of prog rock to get deep and spiritual with Albert Ayler, John Coltrane and the weirder side of music. A chance meeting with Kieran Hebden of Four Tet at a countryside festival in England was all it took for the world to be exposed to his beautiful brand of music. He tells us how you don't need a fancy set-up to make fantastic electronic music, just a crappy Radio Shack microphone, some Yamaha kids keyboards and a whole lot of determination. Riding high with two albums under his belt, Handsome Dick Manitoba of punk rock group The Dictators issued a cease and desist order on the name Manitoba bringin disruption to bear on his momentum.

Perhaps the slickest funk/soul group of the mid-'80s and one of the UK's finest musical exports, Loose Ends and Carl McIntosh weren't just the bomb in '85 - they've gone on to influence countless of today’s dance producers and DJs around the world. As well as penning the timeless Hangin' On A String, Carl has crafted keyboard and guitar chops for soul supremos like D'Angelo, Beverly Knight, Caron Wheeler and Leon Ware as well as DJ Pete Rock. A master of songwriting and laying down the groove, Carl reps for the old school style of melody and harmony, and although he is a fond advocate of the sample and hold approach to tune-making, in Carl's opinion the modern day over-dependence on samples is like giving running spikes to a lame man.

Chris Palmer of Layered Studio in Johannesburg is often name-checked as the best mastering engineer for dance music in South Africa. He's also cut a bold swathe across hip hop and classical jazz recording, not to mention S.A.'s home-grown genre of kwaito, which depends on kicking percussion and a boompty-boomp bass. In his session at the Academy in Cape Town, he shared insights into the mysteries of mastering. It's not always about what your ears can audibly perceive, grasshopper. Chin Senior played a massive role in bringing the blues & shuffle into Jamaican music through his shortwave radio broadcast in Kingston; extending the family affair to a record store and their renowned Randy's imprint, with young Clive helping out on the controls from the age of 15 they were recording a soundtrack to Jamaica's emerging independance from Britain and the birth of soundsystem culture.

After visiting parties at The Loft in '91, she invited David Mancuso to play on her radio show. Next, as the legendary DJ became a friend and musical mentor to Cosmo, she began spinning at The Loft alongside people such as Francois K., Lil Louis, Danny Krivit and managed the original Dancetracks record store with Joe Clausell by day. With friend Nikki Lucas she established the label Bitches Brew in London, founded a publishing company and released her own Ch'I productions as well as a host of other music.

When you meet him in daylight D-Bridge is a laidback and calm fellow. But at night he turns out to be the producer of the grittiest and grimiest tunes in drum 'n' bass. Based in London, D-Bridge has literally helped to give birth to to the scene with a couple of seminal jungle classics. At the legendary Metalheadz sessions he learned to appreciate the best of both worlds: energy through bass. As a pioneer who has shaped the course of drum 'n' bass, he lays out his precise views on the up’s and down’s of the scene. Luckily D-Bridge is not one of the many drum 'n' bass artists who flirted with the mainstream, fell off and has since never been seen again. Instead he stayed true to the music as the drum 'n' Bass scene changed into more diverse directions.

Daniel makes and plays gleaming, disco-influenced music that draws inspiration from early house and techno. Born in California, he spent seven years of his childhood in Taiwan before heading to New York to work in instrument and record shops. Sick of paying stupid rents, seeing a Starbucks on every corner and having to look at George Bush's face, he quit The States for Berlin in '03 and hasn't looked back. Daniel takes his music seriously - like, he used to be too obsessed making a good bassline but is now correctly concerned with structure and composition, that level serious. Wholesale sampling and loops are serious no-no's, ruling most hip hop and techno out of bounds. He records on his own label, Balihu, Morgan Geist's Environ, and Ann Arbor's awesome Ghostly International and is keen to make Japan his next move.

From rock, funk and soul 45s in '69 on the Adriatic coast, to playing soul, reggae and muscular disco at seminal club Baia Degli Angeli deep in the heart of Cattolica club land. Then came the legendary spot Cosmic, an era of hedonism that began in '79, where he would be simultaneously spinning, triggering drummachines and samplers as water fountains bubbled frenetically behind him playing samba with Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode on 33 rpm mixed into African rhythms - all on '70s turntable technology.

Session: Danny Krivit - Edit, Innit? Pt.2Edit, Innit? Pt.2
Mr. K - who better to make us more than just a wee bit excited at the prospect of an anecdote or two, than New York's own Danny Krivit? This DJ don behind the immensely popular 718 Sessions events in Manhattan and part of the Body & Soul triumvirate, is a veteran of the New York music scene. From meeting James Brown and DJing at the age of 14, Danny talked on how David Mancuso gave him more confidence to take the dancefloor "a little left of centre". Danny plays us many of that era's classics and his own edits including MFSB's Love Is The Message. Another delight, which we preview, is one that's definitely going to make a hyper excitable bunch of Sapporo kids get down to an early morning moment - Marvin Gaye's I Want You.
Darshan Jesrani
Metro Area, New York, USA

Session: Darshan JesraniDarshan Jesrani
Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area, Environ Records) grew up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., population 43,000. In this town, known in Native American as the Reed Covered Lodge by the Little Water Place, he started out breakdancing and (legend has it) hacking with an underground hackers network. Next came music - Darshan explored techno frontiers, before starting to dig up records that Shep Pettibone had dropped on Kiss FM back in the day. Via the net he crossed paths with Morgan Geist, and they established a unique sound that put the name Metro Area firmly on the map.

From a quiet, sleepy existence in rural Kentucky, to filling in charts for the godfather of soul, James Brown, David Matthews was working at the right hand side of the man who was to redefine modern music forever. Like many of the great musicians who surrounded James, supported him and aided him, history has seen his work eclipsed and sidelined by the myth of the the minister of the heavy funk himself. Fortunately, fate, luck and a quick internet search led him to contact Stones Throw's Egon, a cratedigger with an eye for detail, who was searching for the human key that could unlock a vast discography, and the story of how James built his illustrations musical empire, as we learn that talent can get you only so far, but dumb luck could get you even further.

At 15, David Rodigan started DJing, and at 55, he doesn't show any signs of stopping. He's practically an honorary Jamaican, playing regularly at soundclashes in Kingston and at the annual World Soundclash in New York. Soundsystems have a highly developed set of rules - for example, something as simple as ordering your set is subject to arcane regulations. First you've got to play the vocal version of your tune. Then your DJ gets on the mic, and only then can you play the dub. And don't even get him started on lighters and forwarding a tune...

From soundsystem runnings at Notting Hill Carnival to engineer extraordinaire for more production outfits than you can care to mention, Daz has gone on to become a lynchpin of the Bugz In The Attic crew, and has hundreds of production and remix credits under his belt. But no matter where he travels or calls home, it all comes back to the original premise - hearing soul music being played loud on big speakers. With plenty of projects on the burner from BB Boogie to Blak Label Blend and DKD, not to mention the recent Bugz album, Daz' vibe is literally sprinkled with lashings of soul from across the whole spectrum of black music, old, new and exclusive...

Everyone who lives in Montreal is supernice, even the local politicians, but Deadbeat is just that bit supernicer. If you make it out to the annual Mutek festival there you'll see what we mean. Anyway, Scott Monteith, aka Deadbeat, makes his own type of dub-laden, minimal-leaning electronics on several labels but has also been known to dress up like a farm hand and charge around a stage in the mighty two-man electronic barndance ensemble known as Crackhaus with good friend Steve Beaupre. Scott's double life must be something to do with the extreme Montreal weather - they're all huddled together eating fondue one week and dancing naked in hot summer rain the next.

Dego McFarlane is considered to be one of the founders of drum 'n' bass. He set up legendary Reinforced Records with partners Mark Mac, Gus and Ian in the early '90s and has been internationally successful with Marc as 4Hero. Dego has recorded in almost every musical style imaginable, pushing the boundaries steadily from the past to future introducing live instrumentation in drum 'n' bass to perfection on Two Pages. Since then he is considered as one of the prophets of the new soul/jazz movement spanning from London to Philadelphia. To be a living legend is not an easy game to play. Derrick May plays that quite well though for 20 years plus. As one third of the infamous Belleville Three (Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson being the other parties) he created a beast named techno that longed for a beauty called soul. Strings Of Life being the quintessential track of that genre, May is responsible for an armada of similar tunes that all mix and mingle with industrial melancholy and romantic futurism. Unparalleled and universally valid... It Is What It Is.

Steffen Berkhahn, also known as Dixon (on his own imprint Innervisions), is best known for his genre-bending compositions that blur the lines between the usual categorical phrasing of house, jiggy broken beat, and buttery soul. His work in Wahoo, along with Georg Levin, was hailed with praise; much as his Compost remix contribution for Sonar Kollektiv labelmates Jazzanova imbued a critically stellar track on their remix compilation. His residencies in Berlin at Tresor and E-Werk anchored him as a mainstay in the dirty, glorious nightlife of Germany forevermore.

DJ Harvey is one of those figures in the dance music world whose influence is out of all proportion to his own fame. Known to some as that bloke who did the early hours slots at Ministry Of Sound, and to others as the driving force behind the Black Cock re-edit label, he's a cult icon to that crowd which looks back on the disco era as the birth of the dance scene. He was also an early exponent of the balearic sound, but it was as the prime inspiration behind London's nu disco of the late-'90s that he's best known for initiating the recent wave of obscure disco re-edits.

Magic Mike has been the driving force behind Florida's huge bass music phenomena since the late '80s. But his earnings go beyond exploring the ultimate 'boom', the man has also played a crucial role paving the way for turntablists such as DJ Q-Bert or DJ Craze. Perhaps even more important, Magic Mike is being credited with casually making the female rump as the only subject of a whole genre. Mike has been topping the charts since 1988. So far, the Orlando, Florida native has sold five million records worldwide with one platinum and five gold albums under his belt. By the early '90s he was being described by Vibe magazine as: "The best platinum-selling artist you've never heard of..."

Everyone's got a favourite Primo beat. Whether it's the backdrop of Nas' portrayal of New York underworld in N.Y. State of Mind, Gang Starr's tale of greed and ambition Just To Get A Rep, or the panicky dream sequence of I Can't Wake Up from KRS-One, some of THE finest MCs to have ever graced a mic, have spit deep lyrics over a chopped up break from Primo's crates. Now time has proved that DJ Premier defined an era. Back then, both beatmakers and MCs first had to battle to the top of the pile, and then had to have something to say. Primo's tracks in themselves are masterpieces in honesty, direct statements carrying the messages of MCs like Biggie, Rakim, Mos Def and Bahamadia straight to the heart while still rocking the dance.

DJ Radar is perhaps best known for his awe-inspiring cuts and boundary breaking turntablism records. On collaborations such as Private Parts alongside DJ Z-Trip, from the era-defining Return Of The DJ Pt.2, through to his work on the Deep Concentration series, he has consistently pushed the limits of traditional turntable music, incorporating sounds, samples and influences that aren't necessarily thought of as staple hip hop sources. His recent work has seen a leap into a new dimension - combining turntables with a live orchestra, in the hope of changing the age-old stigma that turntablism is limited to all that 'wikki-wikki stuff', and creating a written, musical language for scratch notation.

As one of the first DJs to make it onto the radio, Kool DJ Red Alert was there when hip hop history began. In his sessions at the Academy in Seattle he takes us through the days when it was a local phenomenon, confined to a few blocks in the South Bronx. He talks about Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Flash and the other legends who laid down the template. We hear about the records that rocked the block parties, the equipment that was used to blow up the sound, the local stars who thrilled the streets and how hip hop was pimped from day one by a pizza parlour boy who cribbed rhymes from his friend to make the first record.

Dominic Stanton is the real name behind many mysterious pseudonyms: Bakura, Rima, Sonar Circle, Umod, Yotoko. While Sonar Circle was the first nickname Dominic gave himself when experimenting with drum 'n' bass on the legendary Reinforced label around '96, he appeared as Domu, his main guise, on many labels such as 2000 Black, Archive, Ninjatune, Sonar Kollektiv, Compost, Rush Hour and many others. Rhythms as bold as ink brushstrokes meet arrangements filled with detail, right down to the last homemade beans'n rice egg shaker. These days you can catch him spreading his wings at the dancefloors around the world, spinning with friends like Bugz In The Attic, Kyoto Jazz Massive and Neroli in Milan.

You all know about the Moog. But what about Don Buchla, the Californian synthesizer designer who's Buchla Series 100 was released mere months after Dr. Bob's first synth? His electronic music equipment company, Buchla & Associates, were commissioned by avantgarde composers Morton Subotnik and Ramon Sender to create something they could use in live performance - and since then he's been creating and designing a whole range of unusual electro-acoustic instruments and deeply desirable modular synths. That includes the intruiging Marimba Lumina, the classic 1970 200 Series Electric Music Box or indeed the hot little analogue cutie, 1972s Music Easel. Buchla's sonic toys combine a colourful aesthetic with supernatural sonic abilities. Genius alert!

Session: Ed Handley - Dancegate CrasherDancegate Crasher
Ed Handley is one of those figures from the story of electronic music whose footsteps we hear on the decks. He's enriched the atmosphere of electronica, as Plaid and Black Dog in the early '90s. This era was characterised by their 808, DX7, 101, BBS, Old Street, poverty and love. The Black Dog were an enigma. For six years, they gave rare interviews via the internet and refused to be photographed. Then, with the split of the Black Dog, the Plaid career re-activated fusing fractured street beats with melodic bursts, it's the kind of electronic music that makes your heart beat so hard you want to take your clothes off.
Erlend Øye
Kings of Convenience, Bergen, Norway

Session: Erlend Øye - Øye, carumba!Øye, carumba!
Since eavesdropping at the studio door in Bergen, Norway, 28-year old Erlend Øye has become an international spokesman for sentimental lyricism. Hard to believe that six years ago in Bergen, friends were suggesting he find another vocalist to supplement his efforts - luckily, he kept on trucking until he found the right vocal niche. Erlend's efforts grew to notoriety with acoustic duo Kings of Convenience, then made a sidechain via Tellé Records and Röyksopp to the universe of electronic dance music. He's since collaborated with everybody from DJ Hell to Mr. Velcro Fastener, experimenting with new ways to hit the dancefloor just so advising that even if you feel your music falls between the categories, you should stick to your vision.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Eumir Deodato got his start by playing the accordion at age twelve. Strictly self-taught, his first break came at 17 when he arranged and conducted his first recording session for a 28-piece orchestra. It wasn't long before Deodato became one of the most active and respected arrangers and pianists in Rio's busy music scene. In '68, he moved to New York and began working with Luiz Bonfa, while also doing extensive studio work for Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Marcos Valle and many other Brazilian artists living in the N.Y. at the time. He was hired by Creed Taylor to arrange for other CTI artists like Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Tom Jobim. His reputation in the fields of pop, soul and jazz was strengthened by his arrangement work for Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Kool & the Gang.

His ever-changing, avantgarde productions seem to always surprise even the most jaded of ears. Offbeat, yet on point, with a charmingly unpretentious disposition, he makes pop-friendly music drenched in bass and sprinkled with addictive melodies and remixed everybody from the Pet Shop Boys to Goldfrapp, Mocky, Funk D'Void, Erlend Øye, Depeche Mode and Black Strobe, and most recently produced the likes of Tracey Thorn and The Rapture...

If you want to know about the drum and the bass, listen to Mr. Fabio. Having broken through in the late '80s playing funk and rare groove on London pirate station Phase One, he was somewhere towards the centre of pretty much any new movement in British electronic music for nearly a decade after. Popularising the super smooth liquid funk genre, the likes of Calibre and High Contrast must surely remember to send him a card every christmas. Anyone who listens to his weekly Radio 1 show with buddy Grooverider knows he hasn't got that husky a voice, yet he's still considered 'The Godfather'. Go figure.

This guy knows a thing or two about sound wave dynamics. Having been responsible for designing and building some of the finest club soundsystems around the world from Spirit NYC and Club Shelter, to Cocoon and Ministry Singapore. Getting the music to sound the best it can in the space you got is the name of the game, and 'Strop' is a don of psycho-acoustics as well as pro audio components. Probably the most important man not at the nightclub, if George didn't do his thing, the party would be over before it even started. If only more venue owners cared enough to give George and Steve Dash a call before they opened the doors to the dancefloor, clubland and its ears would be in a much better state.

There's the next level and there's the level after that. Then, squinting down on both those levels through binoculars from some unfathomable point miles above, there is Georgia Anne Muldrow. Her first album Olesi: Fragments Of An Earth (Stones Throw, 2006) sounds like a classic soul record melted over a Salvador Dali tree branch. It's like she got her Roland TR-808 really high before starting to compose each and every song on the strange fruit salad of hip hop blues. Now combine the artist's beautifully ragged, sometimes Dilla-esque production sense with smart, surreal poetics and what you get is not just the freshest voice to emerge in the last decade of soul music.

Selling rare 2nd hand records since the early '90s, Gerald 'Jazzman' Short worked his way up the collector food chain ending up dealing tunes to some of the world's most serious break hunters - from Pete Rock to your friend and mine, PM Dawn. Thankfully, Gerald's estimates take into account how good the song is, as well as how rare, and he does find it sad if people buy 45s just to show it off to their five friends who they met on this one forum. And he doesn't feel a need to hole up in a giant vinyl igloo - keeping carefully culled selection at his fingertips of, oh, 5.000 or so. Nuthin' too crazy...

Gilberto Gil is a legend of Brazilian music. Revolutionary spirit is a charactersistic of all of Gilberto Gil's music. Influenced by the guitar and voice of Joao Gilberto and bossa nova he moved from his native Bahia in the North East of Brazil to the more urban influences of Sao Paulo and Rio. In 1968 along with Caetano Veloso he was one of the driving forces behind the Tropicalia movement, which redefined Brasilian modern culture impacting on all the arts of cinema, poetry, literature and theatre intertwining the old and the new, the electric and the traditional without fear of influence to create a new sound for Brazilian music which played on notions of originality and difference.

Ghetto tech is a blend of Miami bass, Juan Atkins-style electro and Chicago booty house - all played at ludicrous-speed. Played in redlight district strip joints and occasionally at regular dance clubs alike, ghetto tech ruled the Detroit soundscape long before Eminem ever rapped about 8 Mile. Alongside DJ Assault, Brian Jeffries aka DJ Godfather is often referred to as one of the architects of Detroit's ghetto tech scene. Five years ago, Europe started to notice what was going on in the Motor City's ghetto tech scene, although ghetto tech never really caught on outside of it's home although Godfather is known to sell upwards of 15.000 copies of a record - in Detroit and Miami alone.

A native of the Boogie Down Bronx, Grandwizard Theodore alias Theodore Livingston has every right in the world to claim himself as the inventor of the scratch. Theodore began DJing due to the influence of both his older brother, Gene 'Mean Gene' Livingston, a record collector and DJ, and his DJ partner, Grandmaster Flash. Theodore got his big break when Grandmaster Flash dropped out of the L Brothers Crew over a difference of opinion. His discovery of the scratch came by fortuitous coincidence and, after he introduced it to the block party audience, a new era of hip hop was born. Thus, it's no surprise that modern day DJ's like Q-Bert still praise him as one of the founding fathers of turntablism.

Born and raised across the river Mersey from Liverpool, Greg Wilson is one of the key figures responsible for the development of the early '80s electro-funk scene in clubs across the North of England before it spread throughout the country. Borrowing from formative experiences at an early age in England and continental Europe, Wilson introduced British club audiences to the revolutionary dance music coming out of New York City. Both reviled by traditionalists and praised by those hungry for something new, Greg Wislon helped shepherd the evolution of dance music in the UK from the soul and funk sounds that dominated the '70s to the emergence of house and hip hop in the late '80s. He retired from DJing at an early age in '84, but has returned to DJ work in recent years and received the hero's welcome befitting his role in the history of dance music.
