Term 2, Day Twelve

For the threes

Thursday flicks on like a lightbulb. Pushing aside their pillows, Mike (Slottkavic) of Scotland/Ireland, Sam (P.nice) of Boston and Victor (Victorganic) of Chicago step out at 7 am to pay a last visit to the townships. Mike feels drawn to get out beyond the limits of the city bowl, to extract himself from the “über über world” of music and nightclubs, so this is an essential part of his itinerary. The group visit a community drumming session, and drop in on a woman in her home. She’s delighted to meet Mike because her son has been to Glasgow - and her proud, welcoming demeanour is characteristic of everyone they meet.

Term 2, Day Eleven

Temperature's risin'

Wake up for Wednesday, squeeze citrus and lace your sneakers. Keepin’ it gully, skirt the edge of the pavement, cutting a path through the Bo-Kaap (Cape Malay Quarter). Mosques and minaretts in gumball colours call your attention to the local Muslim community, many of whom are decendants of people from South East Asia, enslaved by the Dutch-East Indian Trading Company in the 17th century.

Term 2, Day Ten

Summer breeze revisited

Roll into Tuesday. Summer breeze, makes us feel fine...Cape Town’s pavements are melting and the heat makes everything seem slow motion, but luckily the windy city has air currents to shuffle our thought patterns. Electricity jumping between neurons. White shuttles pull up to the Academy and jam on the breaks just as the cannon on Signal Hill marks twelve with an echoing crack. The bang smacks out over the entire city, but you’d be suprised if you actually caught sight of this ‘cannon’. No longer than your fore arm, it makes one hell of a racket, though at that size shouldn’t it fall under the definition of a ‘very loud gun’?
