Four Tet@Fabric

What:

Former Academy lecturer Four Tet, aka Kieran Hebden, has been raising musical eyebrows for time, starting off way back in the experimental trio Fridge, on Trevor Jackson's Output label. Since then Kieran took off on solo flights and plenty of collaborations as Four Tet, climbing aboard the good ship Domino and linking with cats like J Dilla and Steve Reid along the way, all while releasing albums that constantly raise the bar as to what is possible within the realms of electronic music. Add to that his collaborations with people like Burial and Steve Reid and you're still only scratching the surface of his musical universe. Find Kieran tonight at Fabric playing alongside Boy 8 Bit, Filthy Dukes, Egyptian Hip Hop (live), Stopmakingme and Factory Floor with more guests to be announced.

Germany Fri Sep 03 2010 Matthew Herbert in Berlin

Matthew Herbert in Berlin

What:

Introducing: A gentleman genius. One of the first musicians stemming from a dance music background to explore the sounds in everyday objects and certainly of the rare breed to speak his mind on political subjects and creating albums that show the corruption of food production. Matthew Herbert, however, is an originator in more ways than just this. His success has been spread across an extraordinary number of fields. He is head of Accidental Records, which he founded in 2000 and his production credits range from Micachu to sequined sensation Rowdy Superstar to the stunning Roisin Murphy's 'Ruby Blue' long player. Herbert's early days included projects as Wishmountain, Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy and Herbert, which allowed him flexibility between house, techno and genres without names. He has breached boundaries in terms of collaboration too, ranging from his work with the Matthew Herbert Big Band, to working with playwright Caryl Churchill, and purveyor of radical cuisine Heston Blumenthal. Herbert has scored ten feature films, did clever sampling galore and released shimmering velvet sweet house, musique concrete and polemical protest pop. There is so much more to be said about this man of many facets, forays and food, some of which he is gentle enough to share with us in his Fireside Chat - unique in a mesh of pleasure and politics.

Metamorphose Festival 2010

What:

Metamorphose has been transforming Tokyo's techno culture for a decade now, stirring together the big names that everyone wants to see, with pioneers of yore, and throwing in some musical surprises too. Part music festival, part fairground, the setting in Shuzenji on the Izu Peninsula has provided plenty of breath-taking moments, as sunrise emerges over Mount Fuji to the soundtrack of lush electronic breakdowns. The combination of amusement park, hot springs, panoramic views, and visionary line-up have made Metamorphose into an iconic date on the festival calendar, and their dedication to providing an incredible atmosphere has allowed them to secure some unforgettable premiers, like Manuel Gottsching performing E2-E4 for the first time back in 2006. The range of dub, jazz, techno, and world music has set the bar for festivals around the world, and we're very excited and honored to curate our RBMA workshops and very own Academy stage this year including former participants Akiko Kiyama, Daisuke Tanabe, sauce81 and Hiroaki Oba. Other highlights this year include former Academy lecturers Don Letts, Henrik Schwarz, Derrick May, Larry Heard and Moritz von Oswald Trio, plus Tommy Guerrero and Grandmaster Flash amongst others.

UK Sat Sep 04 2010 Dâm-Funk, Tokimonsta in London

Dâm-Funk, Tokimonsta in London

What:

Soundcrash presents a night of future rave, twisted soul and irresistible boogie. Five of the most exciting and innovative acts in the world at the moment join forces for what can only be described as a mother of a line-up. Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dâm-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., former Academy lecturer Dâm spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk. Now with a fully live show, Dâm Funk takes the classic West Coast tradition into today's scene by plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, and channeling the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Rustie is one of Britain's most innovative and ground-breaking producers. Drawing heavily from rave culture as well as the various offshoots of garage and dubstep, Rustie's music has an intoxicating effect, wrapping itself around your brain like some sort of fluff from Saturn. Tonight Soundcrash is proud to present Rustie's first ever full live show to a London audience. London RBMA participant Tokimonsta is the first lady of that unstoppable musical machine that is Flying Lotus' (another ex-participant!) Brainfeeder label. With her own brand of sentimental bass music she has already conquered the hearts and minds of the most influential taste makers worldwide, and is now embarked in a quest to make a name for herself on the global dancefloor circuit. As subtle as her music can be, she is not shy to drop the heaviest hip hop beats in her sets, so get ready for some serious headbanging action. Dimlite is lauded as Switzerland's answer to Flying Lotus, which is a tad unfair as he started making wonky future soul years before FlyLo. His Prismic Tops EP on Stones Throw's jazzier sister imprint Now-Again is one of the releases of the year. This is Electronic Soul of the highest order played LIVE, and we can't wait.

Sónar Chicago RBMA Workshop Pt.1

What:

Not only attracting revellers from across globe, but also branching out to far-flung places like Washington, A Coruña, and London, Barcelona's Sónar festival has long become an international brand of quality music. This year, Sónar will see its first Chicago edition, with the Red Bull Music Academy hosting two lecture sessions at the Chicago Cultural Centre as well as a special club night at the Windy City's legendary basement club, Smart Bar. First up on September 10, tech-step wayfarer from way out West, Appleblim, will take on the Academy couch at 4pm, giving festival-goers a rare insight into the creation of his deep and deadly tunes. Since hanging out at the early FWD sessions he's released deep and deadly tunes on Skull Disco, Aus Music, and Ostgut Gut, launched his own Apple Pips label, and has been widely held responsible for propelling a techno-fuelled dubstep sound to the forefront of public consciousness: from his hometown and west country bass HQ, Bristol, all the way to Berlin and beyond. Hear for yourselves.

Switzerland Fri Sep 10 2010 RBMA Workshop Session @ La Bâtie

RBMA Workshop Session @ La Bâtie

What:

Before he signed to the mighty Warp empire Glasgow's former RBMA participant HudMo had west coast US institutions like Ubiquity and XLR8R waking up to smell the mud roast a few years back, and he's since toured the world with his unique mixture of Atari 8-bit crunch, synth encounters of the third kind, and the type of cone-wobbling mix that should probably be criminalized. Rumour has it he was introduced to the ways of arranging a hit by his Da' (check Diamond Rap by the Glasgow Diamonds), and it's no coincidence that this synth-powered upbringing has informed Hud's style. Still, HudMo was never made for a glitch niche, and his latest compositions see him putting his unique spin on the building blocks of classic soul and r'n'b. In this very special workshop session HudMo will be breaking down his studio techniques, giving away some secrets about how to get your beats sounding proper with affordable software, such as Studio FL and Ableton, and will answer all your questions surrounding the Red Bull Music Academy.

RBMA @ Sónar Chicago

What:

In addition to our two workshop sessions, the Academy will present a stellar line-up of former participants and lecturers on Friday night at Smart Bar. Along with an extended live set from undisputed man of the moment, Space Dimension Controller, who will be taking ravers on a trip from the deepest abysses of a clinical underwater electro world up to the highest disco heavens, as well as DJ sets from Todd Osborn (pictured), Cosmin TRG, and Appleblim, the night will see a rare live performance by astral traveller Bernard Fevre aka Black Devil Disco Club, who emerged from the shadows when Richard D James reissued his legendary '78 LP as Black Devil, Disco Club, on Rephlex Records. Rumours flew - was the record really made by Luke Vibert or Giorgio Moroder? - but Fevre put all speculation to rest by continuing to explore his murky disco themes on releases like 28 After, Black Devil In Dub and Eight Oh Eight, as well as a partial re-issue of rare library LP The Strange World. His live show, realised together with record trafficker and musique concrète expert Gwen Jamois, explores the meandering footnotes of each demonic disco hook like a dewey decimal maniac. Shows from the night will be recorded and broadcast on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.

Switzerland Fri Sep 10 2010 RBMA Night @ La Bâtie Festival

RBMA Night @ La Bâtie Festival

What:

We like our drums battered. So when the good folks at La Bâtie, Geneva's essential two-week long festival of cultural activities since 1977, suggested a Red Bull Music Academy session for September 10, we couldn't think of anyone who fitted the bill better in 2010 than the quintette of alumni Hudson Mohawke, Jackmaster, Braiden and Faktor & Clinic, who collectively form duo Radiorifle. With each one taking today's rhythms into their own hands, the combination of styles from Warp, Numbers, and Rinse FM with a bit of that Swiss flavour added to the mix, should be enough to level Geneva at least. Earlier that afternoon, HudMo will also be breaking down his studio techniques, and giving away some secrets about how to get your beats sounding proper with affordable software such as Studio FL and Ableton. The full festival kicks off on Friday September 3, and you can check the full details over on the La Bâtie website. There's plenty of thought-provoking hip-enticing acts across the spectrum of dance, music, theatre and cabaret. Shake ya Bâtie!

Sónar Chicago RBMA Workshop Pt.2

Our second workshop lecturer is Chicago's own Ron Trent, whose musical journey began at the early age of 14 with the raw beauty of a track called 'Altered States', a timeless underground classic which catapulted Ron into the hall of fame of house and techno. Schooled by the flourishing scene of the windy city in the late 80's, Ron made a name for himself as a DJ who would introduce rare disco and soul classics into the Chicago house blend. Alongside his partner Chez Damier, they defined a whole era, creating some of the brightest moments in the history of house music. The duo also produced some seminal singles for Detroit's KMS imprint and later even worked with Berlin's Maurizio/Basic Channel. Still travelling the world as an in-demand DJ, Ron Trent recently moved back to Chicago and relaunched Prescription Records.

Portugal Fri Sep 17 2010 Hard Ass Sessions @ Lux Club

Hard Ass Sessions @ Lux Club

What:

Lets turn Lisbon into the Capital of something...
Enchufada (J-Wow's label of Buraka Som Sistema) threw the first rock creating the Hard Ass Sessions, and curating music by carefully selected producers from all over the world and producing music inspired by kuduro, a sound that has been creating some serious waves in recent years and representing the current lusophone productions to the rest of the world. Although kuduro wasn't necessarily created in Lisbon, its mutation and consequent dissemination all over the World, took place in Lisbon, the only place in the planet where you can mix funge and cachupa with eggs and coffee. When the Enchufada crew started thinking about the third volume of the Hard Ass Sessions, they felt that there was a demand for a homebase to present kuduro-inspired music in its natural habitat, the dance floor. And so, the creation of the Hard Ass Nights was inevitable. The start will be Lisbon, but plans are to go gipsy and make it happen in other cities as well, to showcase well-known producers and DJs as well as newcomers, no matter where they are from. Publications such as The Fader already showed interest about the project, willing to keep pace to what will come in the future to be. All Hard Ass Sessions will be recorded for rbmaradio.com.

dOP @ Culture Box, Copenhagen

What:

With their offbeat, jazzy, prank-ridden minimal house tracks, dOP are one of the freshest groups to come out of Paris in the last couple of years. Together with their mates Noze they have been creating a wonky, vodka-drenched vision for house music that relies heavily on real instruments, strong melodies and out of control live shows. 'Most of the French promoters don't let us play. They like our records, but they're scared about our live set' they say, but open minded audiences have nothing to fear (but fear itself): Their irreverent love for music is quite contagious and everyone knows that keeping a straight face and dancing don't mix that well. What:

A multi-instrumentalist, who (to paraphrase Archie Bell & the Drells) not only raps but can sing just as good as he wants, ex-RBMA participant Aloe Blacc is truly a product of his environment. Aloe formed the indie duo Emanon with buddy and former Academy lecturer DJ Exile while still in high school, and triumphantly returned to recording, dropping Emanon's full length debut, The Waiting Room, and a stunning solo debut, Shine Through, on Stones Throw. The latter's fusion of acoustic guitar-driven folk tunes, digital R&B seduction suites, and polyrhythmic workouts is as deft as it is def. And he's still got the cojones to pull off a Latinized rendition of John Legend's neo-quiet storm standard Ordinary People. His song I Need a Dollar is the intro song for the HBO show How to Make it in America. He is also working on a new album titled Good Things set to be released in September 2010 on Stones Throw. Aloe Blacc on Tour

Bravo, Aloe!

Sassy J Meets TY

What:

Wait a minute? You better not! TY is one of UK's hip and future hop true innovators. Born and bred in London as Ben Chijioke into a Nigerian family that moved to the UK, this critically acclaimed MC and producer has worked with a wide range of people such as I.G. Culture, Tony Allen, Damon Albarn Terri Walker and the Scratch Perverts, shared the mic with luminaries such as Talib Kweli, De La Soul and Platinum Pied Pipers and has long been involved in the spoken word or poetry scene. Proving again and again that his music is more than rapping over a beat, and has even Robert Wyatt calling one of TY's albums a "knockout". Who are we to disagree? Tonight, presented by Patchwork PopUp, TY will perform live with a full band! Sewing sounds together with the ease of a septagenarian seamstress, Academy alumni Sassy J has been pooling global sounds with her Patchwork club night in Switzerland. Linking vibes from peeps like Slum Village, TY, Little Dragon, Georgia and Dudley, SA-RA, Mark de Clive Lowe, J*Davey and IG Culture to name a few, as well as designing the sought-after Patchwork flyers, Judilla is happy to do whatever's needed for her patented brand of 'La La music' - tunes for the feet, body, heart and spirit.

Academy Alumni @ WHP 2010

What:

Previously known as MF Doom, just one of his many guises such as Viktor Vaughn, Zev Love X or King Geedorah, Doom first started freestyling in disguise at open mic nights after the tragic death of his brother and label disputes led to the dissipation of his rap group KMD. In 1999 he emerged onto the scene with his famous mask, which has come to be an instantly recognisable symbol of this eccentric and truly unique artist. His critically acclaimed albums, production work for artists such as Wu Tang Clan's Ghostface and high profile collaborations with the Madlib and Dangermouse for the Madvillain and Dangerdoom projects have seen him rise to the very pinnacle of the independent hip hop scene, with an almost god-like status amongst his fans. Alongside MF Doom the Warehouse Project will feature two Academy alumni, who created some big waves in recent months: Hudson Mohawke (pictured) and Mancunian Illum:Sphere, as well as Dels and Jamie of The XX. To celebrate this tradition, some the city's biggest soundmen will enter the ring to thrash out them dubplates under the watchful eye of Academy lecturer Don Letts. Four Tet in Chicago

Hot on the heels of his new album - no need to mention it is one of the best electronic albums of 2010 already - find Kieran on an extensive trip through the US of A. Shift Electronic Arts Festival

What:

Shift is a festival for electronic arts. Held in Basel, the Swiss city of music and museums, its organizers and hosts are active in the fields of film, video, media art and electronic music. One of their outstanding features is the so-called headphone concert, where music is transferred directly to each visitor's pair of headphones instead of speakers. Shift's intellectual, yet broad approach leaves enough room on the same bill for this galaxy's leading ueber-turntablist Q-Bert and for Viennese composer and Red Bull Music Academy lecturer Fennesz. This years festival line-up is not confirmed yet, we will keep you updated.

UK Fri Nov 12 2010 Carl Craig @ WHP 2010

Carl Craig @ WHP 2010

What:

In years to come, Techno will be pored over and historicised and whatever the fate of the brave new world's music, a handful of names will have been immortalised through it. Carl Craig's is one. Craig started out as Derrick May's chief assistant at Transmat Records in Detroit and London. In 1989 he released his first single 'Elements' as Psyche on Transmat and became what can be called the spearhead of the second wave of Detroit Techno. In the 1990s Carl Craig released house, techno and electronic jazz under different monikers including 69, Innerzone Orchestra or Paperclip People. In addition his productions can be heard on labels including KMS, Open, Mo'Wax and Retroactive. Soon after his first steps in the world of techno he founded his own label Planet E. Today Planet E is one of the most well known and respected labels for electronic music of all genres. Carl's recent work with Moritz von Oswald and Francesco Tristano as well as remixes for everyone from Theo Parrish, to DFA reaffirmed his status as an exceptional producer, proving he is far from being a case for the history books. Tonight, as part of the unique Warehouse Project and presented by Resident Advisor, Carl will be joined by Booka Shade, Seth Troxler, Prosumer, Kink and others.

Germany Fri Nov 12 2010 Magnetic Man & JamieXX in Berlin

Magnetic Man & JamieXX in Berlin

What:

Magnetic Man are former Academy lecturers Skream and Benga, who only released one official 12" so far, but they've managed to make waves nonetheless, playing live at many of Europe's biggest festivals and landing on the cover of NME. Their collective sound tends to be a bit different from what each producer does solo, bringing trance-inspired chords and poppy vocals to their characteristically heavy dubstep beats. Their self-title debut features a number of high-profile guest appearances, like Grammy Award-winner John Legend and pop vocalist Angela Hunte, who has previously worked with Alicia Keys and P. Diddy. The XX (pictured) are four precocious 19-year olds from South West London, who provide the hushed minimal strokes of Young Marble Giants and early The Cure but through the minds of a young band obsessed with the r&b turns of Ciara and Aaliyah. In fact, they have gone so far as to cover the latter's 'Hot Like Fire' as the b-side for their first single 'Crystalised', and were picked up after recording a sensational version of Womack and Womack's 'Teardrops'. Having signed to XL sub-label Young Turks earlier in the year, the band began to record with a host of the finest producers going, including Diplo and up-and-coming hotshot Kwes. The four eventually settled with the option of recording at XL's in-house studio, with their debut album produced by the band themselves and as far as we are concerned, they made a good call and a great album.
