London-based jazz mag, SHOOK, have recently published their ninth issue with a focus on South Africa's cultural underground. Obtainable in print or a digital format, a few figures familiar to the Academy appear. Right on cue, it's Aroop Roy!!
Since the Academy’s next stop is Tokyo, it’s fitting to hear from Aroop Roy, a member of Melbourne’s class of ’06 who’s recently returned to the UK after five years in Japan. While there he ran two club nights: CDR-inspired evenings called Exposure, and absolute!!, which went global with a 2008 compilation placing Academy peeps, SkymarkDaisuke Tanabesauce81, and Daniel Brandt (as ½ of Scott), alongside production heavyweights KarizmaSimbadDego and Kaidi Tatham. This week Aroop jets back to Japan for a month of touring (see the dates below), we caught up with him beforehand for an extended chat on life in Nippon and his forthcoming debut album, Nomadic Soul.
