To celebrate the launch of the Academy's seasonal residency at
Fabric, we sprung Spring like a bear trap, and embraced the LA west coast invasion with open arms.
FlyLo and the crew descended on Smithfield Market with only one objective: to tear the roof off the sucker. While there might not be any artics, generators, or flashing lights, you still know exactly when the Brainfeeder circus comes to town. The recordings from the nights are now up and runnung on Red Bull Music Academy Radio – who also sat down with the label honcho to talk about the LA scene and hear some forthcoming Brainfeeder tunes, which you can catch on our
special Fireside Chat with the man himself.
One chill Wednesday night in March, Fabric's Room 1 was packed out to witness a wide array of synth and beat wizardry, with live performances from
Dimlite and
Dorian Concept showcasing some of the most inventive patching and wiring we've seen. Brainfeeder young blood
TOKiMONSTA demonstrated why she's such a singular voice within the family, carving her own path with her Akai APC and Ableton, while
Nosaj Thing drew on his distinctive pallette of sounds to create an atmosphere in Fabric that was both familiar and unheard-of at the same time.
Impeccable purveyor of futuristic music machines and Georgian style,
Daedelus worked his
Monome to breaking point, weaving between soulful rave and live reworks of his own beats, while
J Rocc brought the forefatherly spirit of the scene to the dance, with Jay Dee skits and classics like Raise It Up mixed with his eclectic selection and deft technique. Although Flying Lotus wears the Feeder crown, and his rapport with the audience is truly remarkable,
Gaslamp Killer's crackling energy, mic control, and total ownership of the decks sent most of the tongues wagging as ravers left the building.
Rounding the evening off, and pummeling the last stragglers with soca-fied snares and weighty bass,
Kode9 and
Martyn shook the fillings out of dedicated ravers' teeth.
Whether it's the online buzz, the desperate plea for any spare tickets, or GLK rolling down the road like tumbleweed, when ring master FlyLo and his crew of skewed bass heads get together, there's no sitting on the fence.
