Jesse Hackett aka Elmore Judd
From Captain Beefheart to Henry Cows Fred Frith, from unreleased Prince demos to Zimbabwean Chimurenga music, from Camden Road to Lagos, Nigeria Elmore Judd proves a sonic traveller for real, with his selection of
Headphone Highlights on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
Elmore Judd is the alter ego of one Jesse Hackett and is also the name of the band he leads. Cutting his teeth as a session keyboard player for a few well-known pop-stars, Jesse was also a founding member of Rawdog the live band that started out backing the legendary UK Hip Hop act Taskforce.
Elmores debut album Angel Sound was picked up for release by
Above the Clouds Recordings and Jesse subsequently signed a deal with
Honest Jons after visiting Mali with Damon Albarn. In the last three years he has visited Africa three times, and this really shines through in his HH selection. As Jesse describes in the accordant interview, the homemade instruments being used by musicians in the Congo have also been inspirational to his recent material on Honest Jons.
