Seun and entourage in Lagos, Nigeria
Red Bull Music Academy Radio catches up with the youngest son of
Fela Kuti, Seun for the latest edition of
Fireside Chat - find out how the 26-years old vocalist and sax man rocks the house his father built.
Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti first played with Egypt 80 when he was only eight ears old and was elevated to status of bandleader in 2003. His father’s legacy as one of the most influential figures in both African music and popular politics blazed a difficult trail to follow. But it seems music and performance are in Seun’s blood. “I’m first a man—I know who I am”, he said confidently in a recent interview with
L.A. Record. “I talk about my dad when I talk about my music. I don’t have a problem with that because then I’m denying who I am. One of the first lessons I was ever taught as a kid was to realize who I am. If people say I’m in my dad’s shadow, I don’t care. It’s a good place to be. He was a very great man.”
Seun’s own debut album Many Things was released on
Tot Ou Tard last summer and has received critical acclaim from all angles since. "I want to make afrobeat for my generation. Instead of 'get up and fight,' it's going to be 'get up and think'...”
