Calle-iente: Residente, burger, and band
PanameriKa is
Red Bull Music Academy Radio’s window to Latin America’s vital music scene and its protagonists. This week,
Reactor 105.7’s
Elvis is proud to present a band that roars with passion about their Latin heritage and their will to clear the essence of the people that inhabit South America: the infamous
Calle 13.
Hailing from Hato Rey and Santurce, two subsections of San Juan, René Pérez Joglar aka Residente and Eduardo José Cabra Martínez aka Visitante set out on a musical journey that makes clear that being a distant part of the United States, does not eclipse their geographical identity. For years now, Calle 13 have been unparalleled in crossing reggaeton’s undeniable jump-up energy with an ambitious lyrical approach and a good ol’ It-ain’t-where-you-from hip hop swagger. After going platino and oro with their first two efforts, they recently released their third LP Los De Atrás Vienen Conmigo (The Ones Behind Are Coming At Me) through Sony BMG, spicing up their well-proven recipe with Argentine cumbia villera influences and even more colourful melodic structures.
For PanameriKa they break down those inspiration, and play some of their biggest tunes, from their breakthrough anthem
Atrevete-te-te, to combinaciónes with Panamanian Latin jazz OG
Rubén Blades and Spanish flamenco hop MC
La Mala Rodríguez, to more current songs like Latin Gringo Funk. Calle-iente!
