A Filial is a Brazilian project that last year's participant Ben Lamar is heavily involved in, coming straight out of the hills of Rio de Janeiro – and now they're back! Their new project $1,99 is released on New York’s Verge Records today, 13 Brazilian boom bap joints with a carioca swing and a touch of the hot Southside Chicago sauce.

Chicago-born, Rio-residing Ben Lamar sings, raps, and plays the trumpet along with pretty much any instrument you’d care to mention, so he doesn’t have too much time for the beach volleyball lifestyle. Currently studying with the great Itibere Zwarg, he cultivates his studio tan by merging blues, jazz, electro, and disco, with generous portions of afrobeat and bossa nova as Juba Dance, and of course recording, performing and composing with A Filial.

With Okayplayer and XLR8R (“landing somewhere between Flying Lotus and the Beastie Boys”) singing their praises, this collective will have you forgetting all about the conventional time-line of music, and leave you enjoying the company of distant cousins and relatives you never met, but instantly know.
