Arnaud Bernard aka Onra in Barcelona
Barcelona 2008 alumni
Pursuit Grooves from NYC and Paris’
Onra will play mutual gigs in France and Netherlands in November, and are also working on tracks for a collabo project that could be out in 2009.
"Me and Onra met up in February of 2008, he came to visit me. We made a pact that if we made it into the Academy we would do a tour together", Brooklyn-based beatmaker Pursuit Grooves reveals. As a result they just performed one gig together for http://www.myspace.com/ballerssocialclub
Baller$ 5ocial Club in Glasgow (who will also host a night with Gaslamp Killer and another Barcelona participant,
Subeena, on November 29), directly from Barcelona, and have two more appearances in Rotterdam and Besancon scheduled. Check out Pursuit Groove’s
Myspace for details. Besides that, Onra will also play the Tiger Translate festival in Auckland, NZ on November 21. "We're doing a live PA featuring only our own music. In between we're working on tracks together, hopefully to have a project out for next year. We're so energized from the Academy and are ready for the next step."
Pursuit Grooves has a penchant for stretching her studio equipment further than recommended. She takes her inspiration in equal parts from hip hop and broken beats, as well as soul and left field pop music. A mean DJ who's always ready to take the party deep, Pursuit Grooves has already featured on the Dutch Beat Dimensions compilation, and released two albums on her own What Rules label.
Onra abandoned the world of marketing and has taken up beat producing full time – and his release schedule shows it. Ever since his Tribute LP caught the ears of DJs like
Benji B and
Gilles Peterson, Onra has been on a roll, working with labels like
All City and
Musique Large. Recently his Chinoiseries LP, made from a record buying expedition to Vietnam, has been released to the delight of plenty of hip hop fans.
These two’s search for the perfect beat never ends.
