Magic on Queen St West: Musinah and Jake One in one of the studios at the Toronto Acadamy in 2007
Since the Toronto Academy,
Muhsinah Abdul-Karim has been busy, working with the likes of Common,
Oddisee, Stacy Epps,
Mike Slott, Hezekiah, and
Nicolay, as well as releasing her own album Daybreak. In this week’s instalment of the Podfood series, we have a jam she recorded with
Jake One during those wonderful days on Queen St West.
Muhsinah falls on just the right side of experimental, with beats that roll like a drunk falling down a flight of stairs, and soulful vocals that float on the top like fishing lines. Anyone who's dreamt of a better day will feel this lady – positive tangential music for beat lovers everywhere. Taking styles from Chopin and T-Rachs, as well as Alice Coltrane and J Dilla, Muhsinah has scooped up inspiration for her compositions, which get the nod from peeps like
Waajeed and
Phonte, by playing keys and spreading knowledge in continental Europe, Venezuela and India.
With this ode to Henry Higgins, she once again proves that she’s got all the fire and attitude of an East Coast Eliza Doolittle. Hi-roller Jake One pulls all the right pieces together, while Muhsinah’s bass line fell down the Niagara Falls and dropped right into place.
If spaceships fly on music, this one’s gonna be a LONG journey.
