Rick 'The Godson' Wilhite cues up a compilation pulled from the community around his record shop 'Vibes - new&rare music'. Best known for releases under his Godson moniker and the 3 Chairs collaborations alongside Theo Parrish and Kenny Dixon Jr, he also ran the Vibes music store, which proved a lifeline for music lovers all over Detroit.

Detroit's Kenny Dixon Jr. is known as one of the most elusive star of the house/disco/impossible-to-pin-down music scene, both baffling and influencing generations of producers with his inimitable production style and radical approach to media and the music industry. After his appearance at the Academy's roller disco jam at the Renaissance Rooms we managed to catch a couple of hours with the man himself.

The world of roller disco might have slipped into obscurity already were it not for the passion and drive of the man like KDJ. While its easy to poke fun at the aspects of a trend that hasn't survived the cruel hand of time (check the 1979 movie Roller Boogie, for a stylised nail that was surely responsible for disco's demise, as well as some outfits that Borat would have had trouble pulling off), the music has proved a crucial root to house and hip hop, and the general integration of cultures that we take for granted these days.
