Alex O. Smith, better know as Omar S, is a man of mystery from Detroit’s underground. His low-key, raw and dirty house tracks have been dropping jaws amongst music enthusiasts around the globe. Whether these tracks are deep and emotional or harsh and minimalistic, his music pays tribute to Chicago house and Motor City techno. In addition, see Detroit’s next generation wunderkind, who goes by the name of Kyle Hall. Somewhere between the poles of tape experiments bordering on musique concrete and jazzy house, his releases reflect the musical history of Detroit without sounding like genre exercises.
Being a great producer and even greater DJ, the Korean-born Berlin resident Hunee scores with classy house and disco edits on Future Times, Rush Hour and Retreat. As does Tuscany-based vinyl junkie Nick Anthony Simoncino, whose stylings are deeply rooted in the sounds of Chicago and Detroit rather than the Italian countryside. And finally Mr Beatnick, a Londoner and RBMA graduate whose career started in hip hop, before turning his ears to house and techno. Of course the Louche residents Brinsley Kazak, Josh T, Thomas Frank and Bruno Schmidt will grace the decks as well at Brixton’s Plan B.
