Uptown Sunday Night

Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Tiger & Woods, Wonky DJs: Alvaro Cabana, Ivan Smoka & Teniente Castillo, Palmbomen, Joystick Jay

From the gritty basements of East London to the beaches of the Balearics: disco has been enjoying an extended sweaty revival for a good minute now. To celebrate, the Red Bull Music Academy brought arguably the most influential band in the history of the genre to Madrid’s original disco cathedral. Nile Rodgers and CHIC, live on stage at the Kapital. The night was topped off by mysterious mirrorball mavericks, Tiger & Woods, the duo who have induced a whole new generation of club-goers to the sounds that CHIC spearheaded. Also on deck were Madrid collective Wonky, hosts to the sweetest disco sessions in town. Yowsah!

Nile Rodgers

When you turn on your radio, chances are you’ll hear the work of Nile Rodgers. First and foremost associated with his band Chic and their superhits “I Want Your Love” and “Le Freak,” Rodgers’ extra-sharp guitar playing and immaculate production style can also be heard on timeless records by David Bowie, Duran Duran, Madonna, Sister Sledge, and Diana Ross, to name but a few. He is the man behind blockbuster hits like “China Girl,” “Like a Virgin,” “Notorious,” and “Material Girl,” and has raked in more platinum and gold records than the average human can count in his lifetime. In 1998, Rodgers founded the Sumthing Else Music Works record label and Sumthing Distribution, which focuses on putting out video-game soundtracks (including Halo and Resident Evil). Rodgers has also produced movie soundtracks and is involved with a number of charity projects.

Palmbomen

If Giorgio Moroder, The Fugs, and Ariel Pink all got together in the same room and jammed for a bit, you might come close to the sound of Amsterdam’s Palmbomen. After getting featured by Parisian hipster collective Kitsuné, releasing an EP on NON Records and doing an exclusive mix for VICE Magazine, Palmbomen seems ready to do some big things in his idiosyncratic style: combining 60s psychedelic pop with Italo disco basslines and a profound penchant for the peculiar.

Joystick Jay

Oslo’s Joystick Jay has a penchant for rediscovering forgotten nuggets of funk and soul from the four corners of the globe and re-infusing them with a dose of disco. As a DJ, he’s made a name for himself throughout the European continent thanks to support from tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, and his edits of afrobeat king Fela Kuti or Brazilian folk legend Milton Nascimento have become somewhat sought after among DJs in the know. It’s only a matter of time before the rest of his catalogue will earn the same status.
