Artfelt - RBMA Participant composes for the Biennale Montreal 2009

Toronto participant David Ryshpan and our ambassador in Montreal, Scott Clyke, have been enlisted to be part of an open source music project entitled Soundscapes which takes place in line with the Biennale Montreal 2009. While Clyke is involved in the curation of the initiative, virtuoso pianist and McGill University Schulich School of Music graduate Ryshpan, who infuses his classic, free-spirited jazz with a love of afrobeat and hip hop that's not just instrumental but crucial, has been commissioned to compose a soundtrack for Rick Leong's painting Dancing Serpent in Dawn's Quiet (2006), a recent addition to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' permanent collection. These compositions are now open to remixers worldwide and will be released on a limited non-profit compilation CD during the Biennale event in May 2009, along with the best reworkings. If you want to join the competition, drop a quick line at music@biennalemontreal.org. For an inspirational kick-start, check out Davids' blog or listen to his personal Headphone Highlights on Red Bull Music Academy Radio, covering everything from Milton Nascimento to The Roots.
I See Electric Elephants! - Mancunian DJ duo Unabombers to launch festival in Croatia

More than 13 years after starting their now legendary club night, The Electric Chair, which has been a great source inspiration to people such as Joe Claussell and Francois Kevorkian, The Unabombers are now taking their field-tested mixture of northern soul, lazy disco, cordial hip hop, and those very special moments of rave romanticism that you just won't forget, plus the whole family, to a small Croatian village 10 miles northwest of Zadar. Electric Elephant is the name of their festival spin-off, taking place from August 22 to August 24 in Petrcane and boasting a soul-heavy line-up ranging from long-time affiliates such as Jason Boardman and the Idjut Boys, to Academy lecturers Benga and Zed Bias. A three-day ticket is 50 British pounds and can be purchased here.
The Ever-Fresh Prince - Arabian Prince anthology on Stones Throw finally hits stores in August

The Arabian Prince has been making robots shake their shit since the early '80s, producing his own tracks and playing live shows with The Egyptian Lover, World Class Wreckin' Cru and the LA Dream Team. It was his early electro rap experiments that got this Inglewood, CA-born emcee and producer some serious attention and respect from his contemporaries, and in 1984 he landed his first deal at Rapsur Records, a label under the mighty Macola belt run by KDAY A.M. 1580 radio jock Russ Parr. Parr was not only a part time rapper himself as leader of seminal comedy rap group Bobby Jimmy and the Critters, but also incited his new protegé to twist around his name the same way he did with his record label (Rapsur is Rus Par backwards), which led to Arabian's countless aliases such as K.Nazel, The Mik Lezan Co., and possibly, Rock-A-Fella, Professor X, and The Sheiks - whether these were actual allies like DJ Pooh's and Bobcat's Uncle Jamms Army, or mere products of Brother Arab's exuberant imaginativeness, is still an issue of debate to legions of Westcoast rap nerds to this day.

Mixed Up Music - Nebraska LP on Downlow

Having set the tone with the Nefarious Disco 12" late last year, the full length Nebraska LP has finally dropped, and it's everything we'd hoped for. Ali Gibbs, occasionally teaming up with James Mason, twists classic disco vibes into futuristic motorised grooves, that sound like the turbines of a Soyuz-TMA.
Nuff Buff - Detroit MC teams up with Academy lecturer Black Milk for new single

What's with these Michigan MCs and their ability to make even simple sonic advice sound like a call to revolution? Beat The Speakers Up is the first single off of Buff1's sophomore full-length There's Only One, out on A-Side Worldwide in mid-August, and there's definitely not only one on there. With Black Milk delivering tailor-made bangers, Waajeed publicly singing his praises ("Buff1 is my favorite emcee right now! He brings that heat every time!"), and URB Magazine featuring him in their Next1000 campaign, this member of underground rhyme collective Athletic Mic League is sure to be the next luminary in the already solidly crowded universe of Detroit underground rap.
