La Funk Mob, Motorbass, Cassius, Paris, France
It was always a dream for Phillipe Zdar to move to the city and make music – a dream he’s paidback in full, and then some. After getting his foot in the door as tea boy in a big studio, Philippe Zdar met Hubert 'Boombass' Blanc-Francart, and the pair started to make heavy tunes from the off. His career really rocketed when he and Hubert produced tracks for MC Solaar. After Mo' Wax boss James Lavelle heard the tracks and asked to release the instrumentals, Zdar and Boombass started to mix up hip hop with breakbeat, Chicago house and Detroit techno. The result was La Funk Mob, who released two genre defying and defining EPs in 1994. At the same time, Phillipe's experience at raves made him want to become a DJ - and the best way to get DJ gigs in Paris is to form a group and make your own tunes. So with Etienne de Crecy he formed the group Motorbass, and dropped the Pansoul album like it was damned hot. The rest, as they say, is history... In this session, Phillipe takes us on a guided tour of how to create a twisted house and breaks remix in 20 minutes… baaadboy!
