RBMA Radio On Demand:
Catalunya Calling - Wolfgang Voigt (Gas, Kompakt, Cologne)
Kompakt, Cologne, Germany
Looking for the perfect beat. Few people have done their research as seriously as Wolfgang Voigt. One of Kompakt's (Cologne's techno empire for those who might not know) founders as well as a mentor and an on-going source of inspiration for peers like Michael Mayer, Superpitcher or his brother Reinhard Voigt, he is an eloquent voice in a genre that is usually much more ‘minimal’ about its public expression. Using more pseudonyms then Alexandria's library has bookshelves (Mike Ink, Studio 1, Freiland, Wassermann or Gas are just some of them), this proud burgher from Cologne has been hunting high and low in all of the various woods electronic music offers. Along the chase, Voigt developed a passion for conceptual work and highbrow commentary. He coined minimal techno with seldom heard precision and cold winter's day ambiance (Studio 1), re-thought rave (Wassermann) or secured himself a place in the feuilleton with his reference-heavy pop culture project Gas. Evolving around citations from the works of Richard Wagner, Thomas Mann, T.Rex and Queen while staying an ambient-loving technocrat, Voigt created a world of its own. Jumping Jack Flash, anyone?
Please.
Do not have the chubby bald guy conduct any more interviews in english. It makes me want to repeatedly stab myself with a sharp object and that surely cannot be the intention of Red Bull GmbH.
Kind regards,
Caspar Jonas
please. neither the red bull gmbh nor the chubby german advocate repeated stabbing with any sort of object (nor do we advertise hair grooming or weight loss products).
Shame on you, Caspar.
Are you missing the point that these two German gentlemen are speaking to each other in English so people from around the world can enjoy their conversation too? Wasn't my idea but generally these days, English is the shared language of quite a few folk.
And what exactly does his weight and choice of hair grooming have to do with the interview, at all? Anyone who has had anything to do with RBMA knows that it's not a place for haters.
Unfortunately the bald guy is an awful interviewer. No disrespect really, it's just a fact. He doesn't look like he's paying attention to the answers at all, and I don't think he ever asks one follow-up question that isn't already on his script. If he doesn't care, why should we?
Wolfgang, fortunately, is pretty interesting, although a bit wordy at times. Good to hear the intellectual give his perspective and save us for a brief moment from Deadmau5 calling all DJs cunts...for example.
I didn't really understood that black guy question, or should i say the point where he wanted to go. Still though, all the Mike Ink productions are to me the grooviest things i've ever heard in terms of minimalism while keepin a soulful groove in it. Anyways, just pointing this out because to me, Wolfgang opened up my teenager eyes at the time to the whole house world out there...
I'd have to agree with the others here that the bold guy is not the best at rendering a comfortable atmosphere, he's sense of humor is what a call the double speed, where the joker has always to explain the joke a 2nd time which on top of that turns out not to be funny...
This is fantastic, and the first English-language video interview with Voigt that I have ever seen. Since I speak no German, I'm grateful for what I can get here. Since I first heard his amazing Gas releases on Mille Plateaux in the late '90s, I have been following Voigt's prolific output. Essential listening! Thanks for this.
such a legend, thanks guys, it's so rare to see interviews with him.
