Buraka Som Sistema are somehow the band of the moment. Their take-no-prisoner riddims, drawing inspiration from Angolan kuduro, British hardcore and US rap, has seen them provide backing beats for rave activist M.I.A., and dance floor weapons of choice for the likes of Sinden, Switch, and Diplo. Over the last few years, Angolan kuduro riddims have spread through the capital Luanda and out to migrant communities in Portugal. Right now, the style is a huge force in Portuguese pop music and the super-tough Buraka Som Sistema are leading the charge. Live on stage they are a sight to behold, as DJ's Riot and Academy veteran Lil' John join The Conductor on stage and bring their carnal carnival vibes to the party as the missing link between baile funk, breakbeat and Baltimore strip club ghetto-tech. And recently signed to an international distribution deal with PIAS, they give even more weight to the idea that music’s epicentre has shifted away from London, Berlin, and New York.
