Treble-O, Bedford, UK
Dominic Stanton is the real name behind many mysterious pseudonyms: Bakura, Rima, Sonar Circle, Umod, Yotoko. While Sonar Circle was the first nickname Dominic gave himself when experimenting with drum 'n' bass on the legendary Reinforced label around '96, he appeared as Domu, his main guise, on many labels such as 2000 Black, Archive, Ninjatune, Sonar Kollektiv, Compost, or Rush Hour. Rhythms as bold as ink brushstrokes meet arrangements filled with detail, right down to the last homemade beans 'n' rice egg shaker. In this session, the Bedford-bred hardcore breaks bwoy talks us through the history of jacking ragga and rave, how Reinforced's drum 'n' bass twisted into broken beat, and how to keep delivering fresh tunes that you ain't never heard before. »You can start to break rules once you understand them, but I think you have a far wider scope if you never actually learn the rules in the first place - because there's never a boundary.«
