Fennesz

Touch., Vienna, Austria

“Dense, difficult and abstract” isn’t the sole defintion of electronica according to Pitchfork Media. Fennesz’ music (check releases like 2001’s Endless Summer) is proof of that. Rather enveloping, dreaming or sparse, Christian Fennesz has been quietly painting fuzzy layers of sound for many years. On respected avantgarde labels like Touch, Fat Cat or Vienna’s treasured Mego imprint, this Austrian’s sonic experiments have drawn on a legacy that ranges from the lush noise-pop of My Bloody Valentine to Phil Spector’s ‘wall of sound’ techniques for the Beach Boys. Mighty figures such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jim O’Rourke agree – they’ve both been collaboration partners of Fennesz since the early ‘90s. A notorious out-of-the-box thinker and member of the Viennese underground rock group Maische in the '80s, he has recently collaborated with vocalist Mike Patton of Faith No More. Lord Fennesz!
