Gilberto Gil

Tropicalia, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Gilberto Gil is a legend of Brazilian music. Revolutionary spirit is a charactersistic of all of Gilberto Gil's music. Influenced by the guitar and voice of Joao Gilberto and bossa nova he moved from his native Bahia in the North East of Brazil to the more urban influences of Sao Paulo and Rio. In 1968 along with Caetano Veloso he was one of the driving forces behind the Tropicalia movement, which redefined Brasilian modern culture impacting on all the arts of cinema, poetry, literature and theatre intertwining the old and the new, the electric and the traditional without fear of influence to create a new sound for Brazilian music which played on notions of originality and difference.
