Warp, London, UK
Chantal Passamonte, a.k.a Mira Calix, grew up in the siege economy of apartheid-era South Africa. Scarce imports drove her to leave the country, seeking musical immediacy. Once in London, her love for free-form bands, such as My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins propelled her towards what labels like Warp Records were doing circa '91, and pretty soon she was at the heart of this new electronic movement. Mira has been a heavy pusher of fresh sounds ever since, whether behind the counter at Ambient Soho; or convincing a member of the London Sinfonietta to play the violin with their teeth.
