African Dope, Cape Town, South Africa
African Dope, Cape Town, South Africa
Roach and Fletcher, aka Cape Town’s dubby dopeheads Krushed ‘n’ Sorted, have spearhead the dub/breakbeat movement in their native South Africa. A chance gig making a commercial soundtrack gave them the capital to start their own independent label, African Dope, on a shoestring budget. To help spread the word about their new venture and crew, they created an underground distribution system through cafes and backpacker hostels, and found innovative promotion methods, in a dynamic and sometimes dangerous country that’s still creating new avenues for the arts, since the end of culturally-stifling Apartheid laws. Sometimes, they've found, giving people something a little extra pays off... An excellent example of what can be achieved with elbowgrease, footwork and a carefully cultivated grass roots network.
