Robert Owens

Fingers Inc., London, UK

The first song DJ and vocalist Robert Owens wrote was Mystery Of Love - which for house historians of any shade, is some first... Owens, who grew up in the poor areas of Chicago and L.A., started singing at church and DJing at basement parties for the local gangs. Eventually, he found his way to the seminal clubs of mid-'80s Chicago like The Warehouse and Music Box, soon establishing a reputation as a man whose lyrics and intensely emotional vocals could breathe life and soul into computer music. As part of Fingers Inc. he released a succession of songs on Chicago's legendary Trax label that even today are hailed as dancefloor classics, including Can You Feel It, Bring Down The Walls, and the aforementioned Mystery Of Love. Owens was there when the revolution hit, he was there through the 12-hour sets, and he tells us how it wuz.
