Shut Up And Dance

SUAD, London, UK

In the mid-'80s PJ & Smiley and DJ Hype decided to inject some bpm's into hip hop and make rap they could dance to. Hype veered off into scratch DJing, and the remaining pair renamed themselves Shut Up And Dance. One morning, they drove 500 copies of their first tune, 5, 6, 7, 8 around London's record shops, and by the afternoon, the majors were on the phone. "We told them all to fuck off", they say, proudly. Their own label was a success - aside from hits like £10 To Get In and Raving, I'm Raving they discovered Nicolette and The Ragga Twins and pioneered jungle and drum 'n' bass with their breakbeat-laden sound.
